#-I have a dream
Looks like there is really something wrong with my internet explorer. Now even when I try to post on the blog, there are some errors on the posting page.
On the bright side, my new laptop should be coming within the new few weeks! So I'll have a better internet and I can finally store all my music on it.
I realized I forgot to update that Derek wants me to play for SJO all the way till I fly off in October. The recording came out okay, not bad at all, for almost only one take per song. I want to put it up on my blog but I found out I have to post it up on some hosting site and I don't like signing-up for anything online, so if there is anyone willing to host without me having to sign-up or anything, or even better, if anyone has a server or something, host my tracks so I can let my friends listen!
Just came back from a wedding gig at Oriental Hotel. Theme for the wedding: Black and Red. The whole decor was black; table clothes, chair covers, table decorations. The Red of roses all over the place added the splash of colour. There were some nifty cloth roses folded and strung on the VIP chairs. I took 2 for myself, haha. Gave 1 to Mum and the other to Auntie Joyce who was in the car since both of them came from another wedding. Good gift for Mothers' Day. heh. Although the guests were quite young and, err, ah beng, they know their music quite well, with requests like Besame Mucho and Let's Fall In Love. Usually for weddings people request Fly Me To The Moon or Summer Samba etc. Then again, there was a set list of songs they could request for on each table, so that helped.
The groom gave us a red packet of on top of the money we're paid! Sweet! Originally the wedding was supposed to be outdoor, by the poolside, which honestly is not a good idea in Singapore, especially at this time of the year, since it's been raining almost every single day. So as you guessed, when we were setting up, it started pouring so there we were stuck hiding under a big umbrella, with the equipment covered only with table-cloth, waiting for the wedding planner to tell us if the wedding would be shifted downstairs to an indoor place. But our clothes were getting wet from the splash and water still got into the equipment, which screwed it up majorly as we found out during out set. So after like 20-30 minutes of waiting under the unbrella in the downpour, she finally told us to shift downstairs. All the tables and chairs were soaking wet, so they had to prepare a new set for the ballroom. Interesting I must say, such a fiasco. But nonetheless, getting to perform and play is always fun, plus the buffet was very nice, complete with sushi and western food, and terrifc dessert.
I'm such a sucker for good food. heh.
I'm also trying to get RJC Jazz to host SJO since we're having problems with using Lasalle for rehearsals. Although I doubt RJC will agree, there's no harm trying, and they could benefit the school by holding regular concerts maybe once a month, or even hold workshops on jazz for the MEP students, which will be great. Either way, I want to get them to perform at RJC in July, so I'll have to talk to Mr Lee about it soon. The juniors in jazz will also do well to try to get to know these people because it can become a very beneficial relationship especially for RJC jazz club. Since I'm going away soon, and for 6 years at least, I really want to try to help the juniors to make networks with these people in the industry so that the jazz club will not only be stagnant every year but go on to bigger things. What I find now is that the juniors just don't have such macro visions like this. They're content with just learning abit and holding their own small little concerts every year. But on top of that, my vision was clear in the start; to make RJC jazz a renowned name in the jazz scene, be it alumni or existing members, and it's impossible without such networks and skills that these people can offer. Honestly, they can only barely survive without external help from alumni or more experienced players. Maybe they just don't get it, and it gets frustrating for me, because my vision is more grand than what they are even trying to achieve now. Hopefully the new exco will realize how important it is not to stay in their small little world and start thinking and networking outside the school, because the support from the school is just not enough to push for RJC jazz to be a name in the music scene.
I have a dream...it is grand...do you share it?
