#-Scrubs
Today I assisted a surgery. Removed 4 breast lumps from a patient. Learnt how to scrub-up, learnt how hematomas feel like, experienced how it is like to stick a finger into someone's breast to feel for lumps. Here's how to scrub-up:
1. Do a social scrub on hands with soap.
2. Open a sterile brush and use the brush side to scrub cuticles on right hand.
3. Use the sponge side and scrub each finger on 6 planes covering the whole finger and hand. Each plane at least 30 times.
4. Scrub upward toward elbow, covering 6 planes again. Each plane at least 30 times.
5. Finally scrub elbow. Make sure hands are always held upward so water and soap do not flow toward fingertips and contaminate it.
6. Repeat on left arm.
7. Rinse off, making sure right and left arms do not contact.
8. Grab a sterile paper towel and dab dry right arm.
9. Unfold and use right hand to grab inner surface, using the other outer surface to dry left arm, making sure the dirty side does not contact the clean one.
10. Throw away, keep hands upright.
11. Grab a gown, unfold and put arms into sleeves, but do not extend hands out of cuffs.
12. Use left hand to take right-hand glove, and slip the right hand into it, pulling it down while extending right hand out of cuff.
13. Do the same for left hand.
14. Take the paper tab on gown with right hand and hold on to the left string.
15. Pass the tab to someone and turn around to bring the other side of the string around.
16. Grab string and tie. Sterile zone is above waist.
17. Now you're ready to do surgery!
So I really had the opportunity to hold retractors, operate the suction, feel for the lumps and cut sutures after the surgeon had tied them. It was so awesome. Tiring from all the standing no doubt, but the concentration level especially for the surgeon is amazing. I'm really really grateful for the staff to allow me to assist. The experience was invaluable and I will have to make sure I remember all that was taught to me. Surgery truly is exciting! Even though it was a breast surgery, it is still very skills based and I love working with my hands, so I think it'll be great to do it in the future. I really thank the Lord for bringing people into my life to bless me.
